Easy Blackout Technique with the Fern & Flora Embossing Folder
Today’s share features the Blackout Technique, a simple embossing folder variation that will give you so many possibilities with these fantastic tools. This sample features the beautiful Fern & Flora folder – a perfect choice for striking colors and a Kiwiana effect.

Because the images are foliage, I first blended various shades of yellow-greens and blue-greens in a random manner on a piece of Basic White cardstock.
Next, de-boss the cardstock, which means put the inked side face down in the folder. This way, the images are in the “valley” rather than the “mountain”.

Next, ink over the top with a dark ink. I though black was a bit too harsh, so I went with Secret Sea, a very dark blue. In the video short below, I also brushed on some Pecan Pie first; that is an optional step that adds a bit of depth, but the difference is negligible.
As a final step, though, I also flicked on some Whisper White ink with a Water Painter. This gives it a neat bokeh type effect once the ink has dried.
