I had fun last week designing with one of my daughters, Madeleine, while we prepared for a One Layer Card Facebook Live. It was quite fun to go right back to basics – just ink, stamps, and paper. And it was a good challenge to find ways to add interest without adding layers.
A small disclaimer: I did use technically two layers of the same color: the card base plus one more layer on top. I did that for two reasons: one I feel one layer is a little flimsy. Second, then the inside of the card is nice and tidy without any bleed through or embossing lines, etc.
While we made a ton of sample cards, this Watercolor Melon card is the one I demonstrated start to finish. It’s a little hard to see in the photo, but I added some texture by including scoring lines above and below the watermelon slices.
It took me a minute to figure out how to do that so the raised side of the score was on the right side of the paper; see the edited video below to see how this is done.
Another way I added interest to this particular sample is to heat emboss the watermelon seeds. This adds a tiny bit of actual dimension, but it also adds a nice shine. It also makes the seeds really dark black for a nice contrast against the Flirty Flamingo ink.
The Watercolor Melon stamp set is a free selection when you place a $110 NZD order with me during January or February 2024. My second favorite product are the distinktive stamps; they are just ingenious. Simply ink and stamp and you get all that lovely detail and texture! It’s etched right into the stamp.
