How to: Watercolor Resist Technique with Sweet Symmetry

Today’s share combines two of my favorite techniques: heat embossing and watercoloring! The samples today use the In Symmetry stamp set with it’s detailed, solid images:

Start by heat embossing your solid flower images with white embossing powder

I thought I’d move away from the colors in the Sweet Symmetry Suite for something quite different. This is the color version I demonstrate in the video below with Crumb Cake and Soft Suede.

Watercolor the colors of your choice over top of the embossing (see a great tip in the video below)

First, start by heat embossing the sold floral images with White Embossing Powder on Watercolor Paper. Then wash over the images with your inks of choice and Water Painters.

The heat embossed images resist the water and remain white for a striking effect.

Expect some secondary colors will emerge as the inks separate

Anyone can watercolor when using Watercolor Paper. It’s specifically designed to accept loads of water, so you can keep adding and adding layers until you’re happy with the look. If you struggle with watercoloring, it may be the paper that’s making it difficult.

In this sample, I’ve used Granny Apple Green with Coastal Cabana.

Try using the neutral colors with your flower images

Does it look like I used a yellow ink in there? Actually I didn’t. Some inks separate into their parent colors when wet. I love how the Granny Apple green has given me both green and yellow here!
