You know what happens . . . . You cut one corner of your cardstock to make and tag. Then the other side. Now adjust the first side. And the second . . . Pretty soon there’s not much left that resembles a tag! Let’s look at one great way to make a tag with just your scissors. It’s a good tip to have in your arsenal when your tag is too big for a die and too wide for a tag punch.
Today’s project is inspired by blogger Jill Hilliard. I used her cute, simple card design and paired it up with Stampin’ Up’s new Hey, Chick and Hey, Birthday Chick bundles!
Creating a tag on your projects gives you a focal point, a smaller canvas, and the perfect place to add lots of ribbons!
Please also enjoy my video below, showing you how to put this card together, including how to make the tag and cutting measurements.

How to Cut a Perfect Tag with Just Your Scissors
- Cut cardstock to the desired height and width of your finished tag.
Of course, you can use other materials, but we’ll keep it simple here.
- Using sharp scissors, cut one corner of the tag off.
Usually this is done easiest on the side of the tag that is the same side as your favored hand. (Right-handers cut off the right hand corner, etc.) You may wish to draw a light pencil line, but feel free to just eyeball it.
- Use the discarded piece as a template for the opposite corner.
You will need to flip it over so it’s a mirror image of the first side. Then use it as a guide to cut the second corner. Video instructions below.
I hope that tip will help you feel more confident making tags in customized sized!
The Hey, Chick and the Hey, Birthday Chick stamp and die sets are such fun! It’s nice to have some non-floral cards in your stash, too. I’ll share more using these cute sets in the next few weeks, too, especially leading up to Easter.
